I had a discussion with a nice lady today who couldn’t comprehend the desire to live off the beaten path. Why some people have such a difficult time understanding the benefits of the more rural living is beyond me. It seems self evident. It’s all about freedom.
People’s different understandings, and sometimes ignorance of freedom is a topic that weighs on my mind frequently. It seems to me that, for the most part, you can determine someones appreciation for freedom by where they live. Rural living indicates freedom and urban living indicates convenience. We all want both, but how much of one are we willing to give up for the sake of the other. I may not be able to choose the most efficient suburban SUV for NY city living but I can certainly tell you my hours of memories at green island cairns snorkeling.
The conversation with this lady was short and in passing. As I explained earlier running a bed and breakfast is very different than running a city hotel. She seemed to have pity for my choice of living environments and wondered why I wouldn’t want to live in a more convenient place and put my energy into running a city hotel. I could really only give one answer, and she obviously didn’t like it.
“People like you would be upset if I stood outside in my summer clothes drinking coffee staring at the ocean every morning.”
While she didn’t seem to like my answer, she did agree and wish me a good day before walking across the street and continuing in the same direction. That had been my second meeting with her for the day. During the first one, business related, she asked if I was a smart-ass. I think the old lady likes me.
